Motivations for new logo
God has called Gospel Light to reach an exciting new generation at Punggol. In preparation for the harvest, the church began to review our existing infrastructure and processes. One of the reviews involved how we would like to communicate ourselves to the residents at Punggol, which has a younger demography in general. Our church logo, which forms a significant part of first impressions, thus became one of the key foci of the review. Whilst the existing logo has served us well over the years, we saw a need to rethink how we want to communicate ourselves to the people we are called to reach.
New Logo Description
Symbolism
Matt 5:14-16 (ESV) “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
As we are called to be the light of the gospel in the world, the Gospel Light logo is thus a shining light that emanates brilliantly from the center of a jewel. The center of the jewel is a cross that symbolizes Jesus’ sacrificial love and redemptive grace for us. The Gospel of Jesus crucified is first and foremost at Gospel Light Christian Church, and thus it is fitting that the cross is the focus of the logo. The four squares surrounding the cross represent the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
A deconstruction of the logo brings us to the building blocks of the logo – the Chinese character “人” which means people. As the church is made up of Christ’s followers, our logo is subtly formed by the people of God, “人”, as well.
Style
The edges of the logo are smoothened out and folded in order to remove the coldness of a sharp object and communicate a sense of warmth and authenticity. The organized structure of many big churches often gets misconstrued to be too cold and corporate-like. At Gospel Light Christian Church, it is important that visitors feel welcomed and comfortable around us, so that the light of the gospel can shine in and through us.
Colour
The vision of Gospel Light Christian Church is to be “An Acts church for TODAY”. Thus, the word “today” speaks of relevance of the church to the world we live in. In order to be relevant, we have to be modern enough to relate to our generation. Hence, the shades of (Pantone) blue are carefully selected to convey a sense of modernity.
Concomitantly, blue is also the colour of water which is a vital source of life. The organic nature of blue water alludes to the organic life-on-life nature of our church’s mission of leading generations into a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord. This idea of an organic blue connecting “人” or people in the logo with the cross as its center thus accentuates the discipleship focus of our Great Commission.
Typography
Hypatia Sans is chosen for its clean, crisp and casual feel, which complements the smoothened folded-in style of the logo to extend our warm welcome to visitors.
